Theory for Taekwon-Do

Taekwon-Do, has two international languages used to teach and learn its techniques, English is one the other is Korean.
They will often be asked what certain Korean words (used in class) mean, as part of their grading examination. The following information should help you answer these questions.

General

A Taekwon-Do student typically wears a white uniform (dobok), with a belt (ti) tied around the waist. There are two main styles of do-bok, with the most obvious differences being in the style of jacket: (1) The V-neck jacket typically worn by WTF practitioners, and (2) The vertical-closing front jacket typically worn by ITF practitioners.

The belt colour indicates the student's rank. Belts are White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Black. The school or place where instruction is given is called the do-jang.
The Grandmaster is called a Sasung-nim (9th Dan), Senior Master is called a Sonim Sa-Hyung-nim (8th Dan), Master is called a Sa-Hyung-nim (7th Dan), Instructor is called Sabum-nim (4th, 5th, 6th Dan), Assistant Instructor is called Bo-Sabum-nim (1st, 2nd, 3rd Dan).
Black belt students also wear black piping around the edge of their Doboks, this is symbolic of the Korean royal dress code during the Koguryo, Baekje and Silla Dynasties.

Korean commands

Korean words and numerals are often used as prompts or commands during classes. Students are also encourage to count in Korean during their class, and during tests. The following words are fairly common amongst Taekwon-Do schools, but pronunciation can vary.
