The Art of Hand and Foot

Taekwon-Do is the art of self-defence that originated in Korea. In Korean, Tae means “to strike or break with foot”; Kwon means “to strike or break with fist”; and Do means way, method, or path. So, Taekwon-Do can be translated as “the way of the hand and the foot’.

Taekwon-Do has become one of the world's most popular martial arts. There are two main bodies for international Taekwon-Do. One is more focused on the sports element of Taekwon-Do – you may have seen this at the summer Olympic Games – the other is the more traditional form of the martial art, which centres on using a variety of techniques for self-defence.

As a traditional martial arts club, we combine hand and foot techniques such as punches and kicks, self-defence, sport and exercise, to increase your confidence, your strength and your fitness.

Sussex Taekwon-Do is affiliated with the International Taekwon-Do Federation and the United Kingdom Taekwon-Do Association, which are the original founding bodies for Taekwon-do, both internationally and the UK.

All our instructors are DBS checked.

Confidence

We are a friendly supportive club where all our instructors are passionate about helping you to develop as a martial artist and as an individual.

As your skills progress you will be encouraged to grade, moving from white belt to black belt – increasing your knowledge of techniques and their application.

Our classes will challenge and motivate you, but our Taekwon-Do core values to positively impact the world mean we also teach respect, for yourself, for others and the world around you. This positive influence, combined with a general increase in your focus and health amongst a group of like-minded friends leads to an increase in confidence, particularly with children.

We also have fun whilst training!

Fitness

Taekwon-Do will keep you physically active and instil a sense of achievement as you work your way to a black belt. As a total body workout, you will learn effective self-defence techniques whilst burning up to 500 calories per hour.

If you train regularly, our cardiovascular and endurance workouts during training will help you develop a strong, toned and more healthy body.

Strength

We teach Taekwon-Do to men, women and children of all abilities. Physically, Taekwon-Do develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility and stamina.

In addition to improving your overall fitness through practicing techniques with partners and on pads, you will learn how to use your entire body – from body weight to breath control – to focus your power, dramatically improving the strength and effectiveness of your techniques.

As you advance, you will be able to test your skills through breaking – using hand and foot techniques on breaking boards to demonstrate your focus, power and progression.
